101 Engaging Torah Questions to spur dynamic Torah conversation in any setting
Engaging Torah questions. That’s what we need, right? Have you ever wanted to strike up a Torah conversation but just found yourself stymied? Talmud Torah k’neged kulam. We all know that learning Torah is the fulcrum of Jewish life. It is that upon which all else is based and from which all else develops. We also know that maintaining set times for learning is meant to be a starting point. A springboard for a much broader, all-encompassing engagement with learning Torah. Ki heim chayeinu v’orech yameinu. Essentially, an ongoing, loving relationship with the Torah. That is our overarching desire and goal. In fact, the Torah says quite clearly, “And you shall discuss them while sitting at home and while traveling on the road (Devarim 6:7).”
When sitting at home or when walking along the way…
Divrei Torah are meant to occupy us constantly — each according to his unique capabilities. Of course, that’s easier said than done. Particularly if you’re with other people. Oftentimes, you just can’t seem to think of anything that will prompt a meaningful Torah conversation. You want to fulfill the mitzvah of u’velechtecha va’derech, but so often we find ourselves stymied.
And you shall teach them to your children…
Like many others, I have found this to be a particular challenge when I am with my children. I would love to keep them (and myself!) engaged in words of Torah, but how to do it? Stories from Tanach, Gemara, and the Midrash are great. If you can recall them in the moment, that is.
A very effective tool
One method I discovered to be extremely successful is stimulating questions. Challenging queries that people of all ages find practically irresistible. They eagerly attempt to offer a solution. Whether you’re sitting at the Shabbos table, on the road, or just about in any situation, these stimulating, intriguing, challenging questions will help you initiate an animated Torah conversation.
For all levels
One of the best parts of this book is its appeal to all different levels. It contains an abundance of basic questions that, while appropriate even for young children, can test the recall power of the seasoned scholar. There are intermediate and advanced-level questions as well.
Striking imagery
Striking imagery offers a fully engaging experience for today’s visual generation. Together with the fascinating tidbits appended to each question-and-answer to facilitate further adult conversation and study, there truly is something here for everyone.
I hope this approach helps you as much as it helped me to make genuine Torah conversation a more permanent fixture of life!
